Really, what is yoga?
As you read these lines, take your mind back to that question above and ask yourself the question again. It is not a question seeking a ‘right’ answer. It is an intensely personal question. And when you read the question in that manner, it will sound like:
“What is yoga for me?”
That’s right. What does yoga mean for me? What does it mean for my body, for my mind, for my life.
“But is it really necessary for you to ask me to contemplate on this question? Why can’t you just tell me what it is?,” you may think at least as a passing thought.
Today each of us have information about almost anything that we come across thanks to Google Baba & Internet. So it becomes important first look at what is our understanding of yoga right now. May be for some it is a gymnastic routine of getting into seemingly impossible postures. For some, idea of yoga may be connected to some other technique of breath regulation or prānāyāma. I’ve met some for whom yoga is a relaxation ‘workout’ after a stressful day at work and others for whom yoga is a ‘cardio workout’ to burn calories.
In this cacophony of proclamations of what is yoga, how does a sincere aspirant really discover yoga for it truly is? Is there a possibility that yoga can be something beyond the asanas (postures) or pranayama (breathing techniques)? Is it possible to experience and live yoga as way of relating to the world and beings around us?
Can yoga provide a panacea for an ailing world ridden by a sadness with intermittent glimpses of excitement perceived as happiness?
